Numerical Analysis of Switched Reluctance Motor/Generator for Kinetic Energy Storage with COMSOL Multiphysics FEM software

Kinetic energy storage systems (flywheels) offer a good solution to increase the stability of electric grid. The joint operation of these systems with renewable energy sources (e.g. photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind generators) can help spreading of these environmental friendly solutions. An investigation is being pursued at Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Department of Electric Power Engineering for joint operation of flywheel energy storage (FES) systems and PV systems. This article focuses on design requirements of a switched reluctance machine (SRM) for flywheel application. FEM software is used to determine the optimal design of the SRM.
